For me, the biggest flaw in Grand Theft Auto IV, whether you think it was a great game or not, was that it just took far too long to actually ‘start’ the game and get past all the introductory tutorials. The pacing was dreadful, and by that I mean worse even than Assassin’s Creed III, which has some of the worst pacing I’ve ever seen in a game. At least, that’s just my opinion.
I have nothing against slow build-ups. Most of my favourite shows, movies and games have slow build-ups. Most recently is The Last Of Us. But I have a problem when the slowness leads to little or no pay-off or when it’s just entirely unnecessary or, even worse, just boring. For me, GTA IV’s twelve-to-twenty hour start was somewhere between plain unnecessary and boring.
Now that I’m done blabbering, the story here today is that Grand Theft Auto V will apparently be a “much faster” game than its predecessors, at least with regards to the action part of the game.
Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies told Jeuxactu (which was translated by OXM): “We want to surprise people with very intense missions from the start. The pace of the game is much faster than any of its predecessors.
“From the beginning, we want to show off the new game mechanics while creating intense, action-packed gameplay, to capture the player’s attention immediately.
“Remember that the three characters in the game are already living in the city of Los Santos and surrounding areas,” Benzies added.
“They are not newcomers like Niko and Tommy Vercetti, or people returning after a long absence like CJ.
“They already have contacts, they are integrated with the world and lead a busy life – these characteristics should give players a sense of immediate and total immersion.”
Benzies continued on to say that GTA V’s three protagonists won’t all be playable from the beginning.
“We want to give the player the opportunity to get to know the three characters individually, and explore the world as each of them, and it would not have been possible if all three had been available from the start.”
In other interesting pieces of news regarding the game, Famitsu magazine revealed that GTA V will feature 15 species of wild animal to hunt, although the reasons for and benefits of said hunting hasn’t been disclosed yet.
On the topic of animals, players will have a personal pet in the form of a dog named Chop. You know, because dogs and emotions are the in thing now. Perhaps Rockstar wants to get the jump on Call of Duty: Ghosts, right? Anyway, it will apparently be possible to, well, lose Mr Chop if players are negligent.
Damn dogs.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to put a bullet through Chop’s brain if he ever tries that with me.
Be sure to check out the latest Grand Theft Auto V game footage if you haven’t already.
Grand Theft Auto V will be out on PS3 and Xbox 360 on 17 September this year.
